Crazy Ingredient Challenge ~ Wasabi and Grapefruit
This month's challenge was to make a recipe with Wasabi and Grapefruit.. Well, I have never made anything with Wasabi so didn't even know what it tasted like for sure. I did think that it may be a little bit hot or thought so anyways. I didn't even know where to find it in the grocery store and did have to hunt to find it. I found Wasabi Sauce so that is what I used in this recipe.
What is Crazy Ingredient Challenge (CIC)? This is a facebook group that was started by Jutta of Hungry Little Girl and now is being done by Dawn of Spatulas on Parade. I have to apologize as my pictures doesn't do this meal justice and we ate all of the salmon so I will have to make it again so that I can have better pictures.
Grilled Wasabi Salmon and Grapefruit
Adapted from Wasabi Grilled Salmon
11 oz Salmon *
2 minced garlic cloves
1 tsp oil (I used Pompeian Mediterranean Blend)
1 tbsp Zulka Morena Pure Cane Sugar
1/2 tsp Kikkoman Wasabi Sauce (or to taste)
1 tbsp minced onions
1.5 tbsp Maggi Liquid Seasoning (Soy Sauce can be used instead)
1 whole grapefruit cut in half
1 tsp Zulka Morena Pure Cane Sugar
nutmeg and cinnamon (optional)
To grill Salmon
Mix garlic, oil, sugar, wasabi sauce, onion and Maggi liquid together in small bowl. Spread sauce over salmon and let sit in fridge for a couple of hours (the longer you marinate the salmon the better).
Heat grill. I use a charcoal grill but an electric grill would work too.
Place salmon on cedar plank (Not necessary), skin side down, cover and cook over medium-high heat for about 12-15 minutes, until salmon is flaky in the center.
To Grill Grapefruit
Cut grapefruit in half and cut wedges. Sprinkle small amount of sugar on the grapefruit (I used about a tsp for the two halves). Sprinkle with nutmeg and cinnamon (optional). Place on grill flesh down and grill for a couple of minutes until starting to brown. Remove from heat and spoon out wedges and place on salmon.
There is enough sauce that it would be plenty for 1 lb of Salmon, I would probably add more Wasabi if using 1 pound as that flavour wouldn't come through properly with less.
The Verdict: I thought that this tasted very good. It had a plethora of flavours, the slightly hot taste of the wasabi, with the smoked flavour of the cedar plank and charcoal and the sweet taste of the grapefruit. Although hubby said he liked it, he wasn't to happy with the smoked taste and would have preferred if I cooked in a pan. I loved it and the next time I would put a little more wasabi in it.
