Flower Cookies for Momma ~ #fillthecookiejar #mothersday

It's time to fill the cookie jar again... and mine is getting a bit empty.  This month's theme is mom's favorite cookies... Although that it isn't really what I did as I was thinking the theme was cookies for mother's day

so that is what I did... Cookies for mother's day.  Well I could use the excuse that I really don't remember what cookies my mother liked, although I do remember her making cookies lots.  We had fresh cookies often when we returned from school.. My favorite memories.

While traveling last week and being stuck at Chicago airport I needed something to read, so headed over and started to browse through the magazines.  I saw some Flowered Cupcakes on the cover of the Family Circle Magazine and thought I would try my hand on doing the same design on a sugar cookie...

Flowered Cookies for Momma

Orange Flavoured Sugar Cookies (printable recipe)
Ingredients:
1 cup margarine ( I used butter)
1 cup Zulka Morena Pure Cane Sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp orange peel powder (I buy mine from My Space Sage)
2 1/2 cups flour
2 tsp cream of tartar
1 tsp baking soda

Directions:
Cream butter and sugar together in mixing bowl.
Add eggs, one at a time.  Beat until smooth.
Sift flour, orange peel powder, cream of tarter and baking soda.
Slowly blend in dry ingredients into butter/egg mixture.
Roll dough into inch balls.  Flatten slightly with bottom of glass dipped in flour.
Place on greased cookie sheet or cookie sheet covered with baking mat.
Bake at 350 degrees for 10-12 minutes until bottom of cookies are slightly brown. ***
Makes approx 2 dozen cookies

***Cooks Notes:  My hubby likes his cookies brown so I bake mine longer then this.. about 15 minutes. This made the cookies browner and crispy.  I also only decorated 7 cookies as he doesn't like frosting on his and I sure don't want to eat too many.

Decorating
Ingredients:
Buttercream frosting or bought frosting (enough to cover the tops thinly with frosting).
ButterCream Frosting (this recipe was enough to frost about 10 cookies)
1/4 cup butter
1 cup powdered sugar (confectionery)
1 tbsp milk
Beat butter for approximately 3 minutes.  Add powdered sugar and mix until well combined.  Add enough milk so that you can spread the frosting.
Miniature marshmallows (I cut each marshmallow into 3 and had approx 35-40 petals per cookie)
Coloured sugar (I used Zulka Morena Sugar and 1 -2 drops food colouring to get the colour I wanted.. I made the light first and then added a bit more food colouring to get it darker)
Green licorice or laffy taffy sticks (cut in half)

Directions:
Cut marshmallows into thirds lengthwise and dip sticky side into coloured sugar.  Set aside
Make frosting as above and cover top of cookie with a thin layer of frosting.
Arrange petals from the outside in, alternating light and dark colours.
It is easiest to frost and decorate each cookie separately.
To make stems and leaves I used laffy taffy.  First microwave the laffy taffy for approx 8 minutes until slighly soft.  Cut it into two.  Roll out taffy until thin,
Arrange cookies on platter so look like a bouquet, place laffy taffy so they look like stems.
I made leaves by flattening the laffy taffy and scoring with a knife.
Tie a bow around the stems.

Mine didn't turn out like these but I think I did an ok job.

  3. These are absolutely beautiful!! Almost to pretty to eat, but in the end, all cookies need to be eaten and enjoyed :) I think the springiness of these is a nice contrast to that snow you still have!!
