Sweet Potatoes Fries and Jalapeno Salmon Sauce #CIC

I have to tell you a secret.  I really don't like Sweet Potatoes.  So when I found out that Sweet Potatoes and Jalapenos was picked for our Crazy Ingredient Challenge I knew I would be going outside of my box.

Sweet Potatoes Fries and Jalapeno Salmon Sauce

Sweet Potatoes and Jalapeno Salmon Sauce - Crazy Ingredient Challenge using Sweet Potato and Jalapenos.

I had many things go through my mind when I was trying to figure out what I was going to make with sweet potatoes.  One thing I did know was that I had to make something that would cover the taste of sweet potatoes as they aren't my favorite.  I decided to make our salmon sauce that I use with yam fries and it worked out perfect.. Maybe I will even make sweet potatoes more often.

Crazy Ingredient Challenge - Sweet Potato and Jalapeno Salmon

Ingredients:
2-3 Sweet Potato
Salt
Oil for frying
2 tbsp oil (I used Avocado Oil)
1 tbsp tomato paste
1 tsp ginger
1 clove ginger
1/2 tsp anise
1/2 - 1 jalapeno
1/2 tsp black peppercorn
1/4 cup onion (approx)
1 large tomato
1/3 lb smoke salmon
1 mini pepper
small amount Banana pepper

Directions:
In saucepan add 2 tbsp oil and 1 tbsp tomato paste. Over medium heat cook for about 5 minutes.  Add about 1 tbsp of water so that the tomato paste and oil mix.
Add onion and small amount of minced jalapeno and continue to cook.
Using your mortar and pestle, grind together ginger, garlic, anise, black peppercorn, few slices of onion and 1/2 jalapeno.
Add the spices to tomato paste mixture.
Mince tomato and continue to cook on low heat.
Add smoke salmon and mix, continue to cook on low heat until mixture boiling.
Just prior to taking off heat, add mini pepper and banana pepper and cook for about 1 minute later.

While sauce is cooking cut up sweet potato into large slices.
Sprinkle small amount of salt over sweet potato.
Heat oil over medium high heat.
Add sweet potato into oil and fry until golden brown.

Enjoy sweet potatoes with sauce.

  1. This smoked salmon sauce sounds delicious. I always thought yams and sweet potatoes were very similar in taste and could be used interchangeably? I don't know that I have ever tried yams...I'll have to check it out. Thanks for a great recipe.

    1. You can add them interchangeably but they do taste different and look different. I think here in United States most people think they are the same. Yams are bigger and white in colour.

    1. I normally use a different type of hot pepper that is used in Africa for this sauce but the jalapenos work well too.

  5. I am so intrigued by your sauce! Sweet potato fries are a big hit in our house - my husband always orders them at a restaurant when it's an option, the upcharge is no matter when it comes to sweet potatoes!
