Herb Garden

Do you grow your own herbs or buy them?
Last year I decided to grow my own and see what happens.  My plan was to hopefully grow them all year round but by the end of September they were starting to die.  I am not sure if it was because I had too small of pots or because I kept forgetting to water them.  My husband said that it was because of the latter.  He probably is right, but I won't tell him that.
I do plan to plant more this year.  I might even branch out to a few different types.  We will see what happens.  I really should get doing them.  I do have the pots ready.
I took small clay pots and spray painted them a blue and green colour as that is the colours of my kitchen and pantry.  I had some scrapbooking letters that I used to label the pots, so that I would know what was growing and not mix them up.

As you see I planted Anise, Oregano, Parsley, Basil and Thyme.  These are the spices that I use a lot of.  This year I am not sure about the Anise as I didn't know when I should be harvesting them and I waited to long..

I had to replant the Thyme as it didn't grow..

I loved having fresh herbs to use in my baking and cooking and can't wait have them again.  This year I am going to try and dry them and crush them.  Hopefully that will work.

  1. You can freeze extras and it keeps several months almost like fresh! Fresh herbs rock!

  2. Good luck! Herbs are one of my favorites things to grow. I really enjoy pruning them each week to keep making them bushier :D Whenever I prune more than I can use, I just dry them. Before I know it, I have enough dried herbs to use all winter. Some of the herbs outside will come back. I've had the same pot of chives for over 10 years now. They just take care of themselves. I also noticed my oregano and lemon balm are both coming back (in pots.) Love it.

    1. That sounds wonderful Toni. I will have to prune mine. I didn't do that last year.

  3. I love growing herbs but most of the time forget about them and they die. This has inspired me to try and start again! :)

  5. I enjoy fresh herbs very much. Now I have coriander and rosemary going and I'm lucky that I have a tiny piece of garden, where I can grow some more. The chives is coming back each year without asking and so does the oregano. The thyme tries to take over the garden.
Good luck and enjoy your herbs and the growing of them. At times I have to check every day or when it's really hot twice a day to save them from drying and from death.

    1. I moved my chives to another spot in my yard. They were in my flower garden, so hoping that they will grow where I put them. My biggest problem is remembering to water them so hopefully I do better this year.
