This and that: Burlap Place Mats

Burlap Place Mats

Something I have always done is place lines on my dining room table, either by using place mats or tablecloths or sometimes both.  I have always wanted to make my own and I have had the chance with the help of DecoArt.

Burlap Place Mats

I was given paints and stencils from DecoArt to make this project.  All opinions are 100% mine.

Materials:
Burlap
SoSoft Fabric Paint (I used Burnt Sienna and Cadmium Orange)
Americana Decor Stencil
tape
Pouncer brush or stencil brush

Directions:
I used one of my place mats as a guide for the size of the place mat I was making.  I cut the burlap approx an inch larger then the place mat I had.  Tape down the stencil to the center of the place mat. Using a small amount of paint on the pouncer brush, fill in the stencil.  To prevent bleeding under the stencil blot off most of the paint before filling the stencil.  Apply several light applications instead of one heavy.  I did use a small angle brush to fill in the very small parts of the stencil.  Let the paint dry for 48-72 hours.
Fray edges of burlap about 1/4 - 1/2 inches.

Wash paint brushes and stencils per manufacturers recommendations.  I use Dawn Dish Soap.  When washing stencils with many cuttings make sure you don't bend the stencils.

I can't wait to have a cup of tea or coffee with friends and use my new homemade place mats.
Right now I have only made two place mats but I plan on making a total of 8 and a table runner.  I have other colours ~ ,Rose, Antique Gold, Avocado Green and Baby Blue Deep.  I will be making 2 of each colour.  I will update with pictures when I have them all done.

I also have a couple of other projects that I plan on making with the stencils and paints that I received, make sure you come back to check out what I am going to do.

  5. That's a wonderful idea! Burlap is quite heavy, so how do you keep the fabric from scratching the table?
